10月31日、マイアミの６センスアカデミーでエナンの復帰セレモニーが行われました。その際のインタビューの記事。
■October 31, 2009 - What makes Henin tick?

「何がエナンを動かしたか？」
>>"When I talked to her in July, when she started to think about coming back, she told me that when Federer won Roland Garros, she put herself in his place," Carlos Rodriguez, Justine's long-time coach, explained this afternoon.
"She is thinking this guy who had never won the French Open and who they were saying would never be No. 1 again fought back to win the French and reach No. 1 again. And I believe Justine is now thinking, 'Why can't I win Wimbledon then.' "
This road back to the women's tour began in July when organizers of a December exhibition in Dubai called her to invite her to play against three top retired women. "But then they changed," said Justine. "Now I was going to play active top-10 players." Like Dinara Safina, who was No. 1 at the time.
カルロスが言うには、「７月に彼女と話した時、彼女は復帰を考え始めていた」。フェデラーがフレンチオープンを優勝した後のこと。エナンは「自分も」と思ったと。

復帰への道のりは７月から始まっていた。ドバイのエキシビジョンの主催者がエナンを招待。ほかの３人の引退した選手とのエキシビだった。ところが、それが変更された。ナンバー1のサフィナなどの現役のトップ10選手とのエキシビに。
"I thought, 'I'm not going to be ready for this. But maybe I can practice and it will be a nice challenge for me.' So I called Carlos (who was in France) and asked him to start training me."
Initially, it was to be a one-off exhibition. No comeback. "After two or three practices, I began to think, 'I'm still young and while I have no regrets about stopping in May of 2008.' I learned I could live without tennis. I can do it. But I'm only 27 years old. So I want to try. I want to come back."
エナンは「それには準備できないだろうと思いました。でもたぶん練習はできるし、それはナイスなチャレンジだと思ったので、カルロスを呼んでトレーニングを始めたんです。」

■Henin has lofty goals in return to pro tennis

"I started to say, 'Well, I missed Wimbledon,'" Henin told the AP. "That moment was something, I don't know, something came over me. It's a dream. I don't know if it will come true, but I like to dream. I dreamt about it a lot."
"If it wasn't realistic, I probably wouldn't have started to play tennis," she said. "Probably it's ambitious. But if I thought I had no chance, I would have stayed home."
「ウインブルドンで勝てると信じられないなら、復帰はしなかった。」とエナン。「ウインブルドンが欲しい、と思い始めたんです。その瞬間、何だかわからないけれど何かが私に舞い降りてきました。実現するかどうかわかりません、でも夢を追うのが好きです。ウインブルドンは何度も夢見たことです。」
「それが現実的でないのなら、私はテニスを始めなかったでしょう。これは野心です。でももしチャンスがないと思うのなら、私はうちにいますよ。」
この記事によると、エナンは引退後１年ほど、ラケットを握ることもなく、ほとんど何のスポーツもしなかった、ランニングすらしなかったそうです。テニスを思い出させるものは、右膝の手術の跡だけぐらい。その膝は昨年の12月に手術をし、今はまったく痛みがないと言っています。
それから犬のDEUCE。今14ヶ月。とっても可愛がっていて、来年ツアーにも帯同させるつもりのようです。
＜＜というわけで、ウインブルドンが欲しい！ と声を大にして宣言しているわけです。現役中は決してこんな風には言わなかった。「たとえウインブルドンが獲れなくても、私の幸せには変わりはないの」といった、ファンからすると複雑なコメントをしていました。やっぱり欲しくてたまらなかったんですねえ。
それにしても、きっかけはやはりエキシビ用の練習だったのですね。ヒンギスもそうでした。キムも伊達さんもそうでした。おそるべしエキシビ効果。
ところで、ただいまイヤーエンドマスターズ、ウイリアムズ姉妹が決勝中。今年も数試合ガオラで見ていたのですが、なんだか体力勝負になっています。

オーストラリアン・オープンWC
エナンの2010年プランが着々と発表されています。
復帰戦はオーストラリアのブリスベンから始まります。そしてオーストラリアン・オープンのWCを申請、当然ながら受理されました。

2009年からWTAの大会運営に大幅な変更があり、私はまだよく把握していません。大会の格付けは、
●Grand slam
●Premier Mandatory：インディアンウエルズ、マイアミ、マドリッド、北京
●Premier 5：ドーハ、ドバイ、ローマ、シンシナティ、トロント・モントリオール、東京
●Premier：賞金総額700万ドルか600万ドル。（2009年は10大会）
●International：賞金総額220万ドル以上（2009年は29大会）
という順位付けで、ブリスベンの大会はインターナショナル。2008年までの格付けだとティア３〜４でしょう。
ちなみにAO前のPremier大会はシドニー。以前と変わらず、AO直前週に開催。

驚愕のエナン復帰情報から３週間ほど経ちました。
今年から大幅変更になったというWTAのルールをちょっと見てみたら、本当にいろいろ変更になっているらしく、なんだか浦島太郎です。大会ごとのポイント、上位選手の出場義務なども大きく変わりました。WTAのルールブックが400ページ以上あるので、とても読み切れませんが、そのうち追々読んでいきましょう。明らかなのは、以前と比べ、トップ10プレーヤーに課せられる義務や規程が山のように増えていること。トップ10プレーヤーを大きな大会に参加させてトップ争いを面白くさせようという意図があるのでしょうが、これが効果を発揮するのは来年かなあ^^

A Great New Adventure

My Darling Friends,
After 15 months of absence, I am pleased to announce to you that I’ve decided to begin my second tennis career. I don’t want to describe it as a comeback. It’s a new life that opens for me.
I left tired, exhausted and lived a deep need to prove that I can live differently than only through tennis. I wanted to be like everyone - to live as an adult, not a child, but as a grown woman.

友人のみなさんへ。
15ヶ月の不在の後、私がテニスのセカンドキャリアを決心したことを、みなさんにお伝えできることをうれしく思います。これをカムバックと表したくはありません。私にとって新しい人生の始まりなのです。
私は疲れ、消耗していました。そしてテニスだけのではない違う生き方ができることを証明する必要がありました。私はみなさんのように、つまりひとりの大人として、子供ではなく、成熟した女性として生きてみたかったのです。
These past 15 months were difficult at times, but it was very rewarding. I learned new things, and discovered more things about myself. These moments gave me an opportunity to focus only on myself, and it helped me realize that I still had many things yet to achieve. I need to push the limits higher, and explore new challenges.
The challenge today is not about understanding size limitations, but of raising dimensions. And I plan to do exactly that, I am ready to do things differently, I can give and share. What I keep in memory is the human adventure, the bond with you; my fans. I want to give anticipation and emotions.
この15ヶ月間、時に難しいこともありましたが、とても価値あるものでした。私は新たな事を学びました。自分自身についても発見するものがあり、そして私にはまだやり残したことがあると理解することができました。私は限界をもっと高く掲げ、新しいチャレンジを追求する必要があります。

カムバックではなく、「新しいキャリア」だと書いています。かつてのエナンに戻るのではなく、新しいやり方でトライする。いったいいつ頃から温めていた計画なのかなあ？ 「The challenge today is not about understanding size limitations, but of raising dimensions.」のdimensionsが具体的にどんなことを指すのかが気になります。

というわけで、私たちはエナン船に乗って、まだ見ぬ大海へグレート・アドベンチャーに旅立つことになりました。いきなり船出を告げられ、「さぁみなさんご一緒に！」と言われているようなものです^^
カムバックではなく、「新しいキャリア」だと書いています。かつてのエナンに戻るのではなく、新しいやり方でトライする。いったいいつ頃から温めていた計画なのかなあ？ 「The challenge today is not about understanding size limitations, but of raising dimensions.」のdimensionsが具体的にどんなことを指すのかが気になります。

エナン引退後にも、みなさんの熱い、そして疾風のようなメッセージに、私は幾度となく慰められ、いそいそとリンクを開けたりして過ごしてきました。（エナン観戦記は2006年で途切れていますが、それは私のエナンロス症候群が治癒した証拠です。）感謝しています。この15ヶ月間、みなさんがこの極東の国から、エナンの復帰を実は心待ちにしていたんだなあと思うと、エナンは本当に恵まれたやっちゃなあと思います。これからもよろしくお願いします。

"She has entrusted me (to be her coach) once again and I will try to never let her down.
"I'm very happy to be helping her to restart her new life. It's a super challenge for her. The desire to win Wimbledon is one of the main reasons she's come back and I'll do everything to help her do it."

たしかに８月後半から前ぶれはありました。９月に入ってもその噂は絶たず、９月半ばには「RTLで復帰の記者会見をやる」という噂が飛びました。その日が「９月16日」と報じたところもあって、かなりキテいるなあと複雑な心境で見守っていました。
噂は大当たりでした。ベルジャンメディアの噂はいつも当たります。
それにしても、どうしてこんな突然なの？ しかもOSでは何の発表もなくて。も、エナンの言うことは信用しません^^
私はずっと復帰の可能性はゼロ、復帰しなくていいと思っていました。最近ようやくエナンロス症候群から抜け出したところでした。またあの、「ライブスコアの夜なべ」の日々がやってくるのかと思うと、あちゃーという気分です。でもうれしい。夜中ですが祝杯上げています。
エナン。あれほど否定していたカムバックをする以上、よほどの決意があってのことでしょうね。その決意を応援します。
